Head Teacher at Noam Primary School

Shalom and welcome to JEDmail 37!

So, what did you do with your spare month? Although we are more frequently heard to say things like "Thank G-d it's nearly Shabbat!" we sometimes think "How can I get another two days in my week? There's just not enough time!" So when Jewish Studies staff get an extra month in their year, what did they do with it and will it affect the way that they arrange the curriculum for next year as well, even without the extra time?

One event that happened during Adar 1 was the European Conference of Jewish Communities and we welcome some of the participants as new JEDmail community members. If there is something that you would like to see in JEDmail or share with the community, let us know.

A report on the conference can be found here http://www.jta.org/page_view_story.asp?intarticleid=15089&intcategoryid=2

Enjoy your Adar 2.

EuroPurim 2005 - the biggest purim party in the world!........

Many people remember the great pan European chanukiah lighting we held
following the last Arachim Conference in London. This year we met in
Paris and decided to celebrate our common faith and culture in a very
simple, yet exciting, way.
If your nursery or school is holding a Purim event, take a digital
photo or two, including its name and location [city will do!] and send
it to info@aje.org.uk.

We will forward it to the European Council of Jewish Communities'
website and tell you when you can view it - and all the other schools
and nurseries in Europe, from Spain to Russia, from Finland to Turkey.

Everything Yomi

This week saw the end and the beginning of the worldwide learning project that is known simply as Daf Yomi. Every day participants learn a daf (page) of the Talmud, which means that each cycle takes seven years to complete. This week saw the end of the 10th cycle and the beginning of the 11th. Although the Gemara has not changed the technology giving access to it has leapt forwards since the tenth cycle began over seven years ago. There are many websites offering support in one form or another.

One site offers audio and video in English, French, Hebrew or Yiddish as well as the daf of Gemara being learnt that day on the same page.
http://www.hadafhayomi.co.il/

However, Gemara is not the only text to get the Yomi treatment. You can join with a program of daily learning of:

# Mishnah Yomi
# Halachah Yomi
# Mishnah Berurah Yomi
# Shemiras ha'Lashon Yomi
# Rambam Yomi
# Rashi Yomi

Here is next weeks calendar for some of those. http://www.dafyomi.co.il/calendars/yomi/ymi65-26.htm

How might this style of learning benefit your pupils, students and colleagues?

What technology might best support such a program?

What topics would this program best lend itself to?

Please send us your thoughts and we'll share them with the JEDmail community.
(one each day of course).

Why is this year so different? - Erev Pesach on Shabbat

Rabbi Philip Ginsbury presents a guide to the issues and a helpful set of practical planning points with regard to Pesach preparations this year as Erev Pesach falls on Shabbat. Published by the United Synagogue, this short document in large print is an easy to follow guide to the 3 days leading up to pesach, when first night seder is Motzei Shabbat. Pupils could easily use the checklist (and older pupils the document itself) to create timelines and charts that would guide them and their families through this series of knotty problems. I t gives many opportunities to discuss a range of issues with regard to Shabbat and Yom Tov and also presents a challenge for pupils to see if they can solve some of the logical, halachic problems for themselves.

The guide can be downloaded in PDF format from http://www.unitedsynagogue.org.uk/pesachguide2005.pdf

  Purim

The Story of Purim is comprised of a scene-by-scene audio play, with accompanying pictures in colouring book form. You can download all of the pictures for use as colouring sheets, to create a wall display with pupils writing the appropriate sections of text for each picture in their own words. You could then use the audio play as either a trigger to the writing or as a fun review on completion. Well worth a listen

This is the zip file for the colouring bookpictures. See above.

Illustrating connections between Chanukah and Purim - between the Gregger and the Dreidel, between the story of Joseph (that we read at Chanukah time) and Purim. For a class who already have the basics firmly cemented, this makes for an interesting bit of analysis, centring on the balance between prayer and action.
http://www.wzo.org.il/en/resources/view.asp?id=118

Analysis of characters in the story - an in depth view, using some midrash and a little logical deduction, gives us a little more understanding of the characters and their motivations, eac in their own context.
http://www.wzo.org.il/en/resources/view.asp?id=127

Understanding Purim as a point of change in the way that the Jewish people would relate to Hashem in the future. Although this begins by comparing Chagei Tishri with later festivals, the main sections dealing with Purim give us yet another insight into what is hidden behind the mask of Purim.

A good collection of Purim songs . The texts include English translation and Ashkenazi transliteration (some teachers may need to make small adjustments to these. There are accompanying audio files using Real Player. Again these are in Ashkenaz pronunciation so may be appropriate for you or maybe just as a guide for teachers to remind them of how the tune fits the words prior to teaching it.

A host of different Purim articles for many age-groups, linked to the quiz. See below.

From the OU Page. A well-written piece on this idea, that could be adapted for class discussion or other activity

This is a good summary of this concept and an interesting direction to take pupils in, discussing their outward behaviour versus inner thought, motivations and feelings.

This sitemap shows the subjects covered in the study area. Each section examines an aspect of Pesach (and later Lag B'omer and Shavuot) in simple, informative language. The activities are ideas for teachers.
