The Supreme Court

This eye-catching building is located on Government Hill in Jerusalem. Funds for the new building were provided by the Rothschild family and the new building was finished in 1992. It is the centre for Israel's twelve Supreme Court judges.

It was designed by the sister-brother team of architects Ada Karmi-Melamed and Ram Karmi. According to the architects, three broad themes determined their design of the Supreme Court Building.

The first theme is based on location and site. Its location in Jerusalem commands the urban fabric of the city. Its site mediates between the Judean Desert to the east and the Mediterranean Sea to the west.

Secondly, the building aspires to reflect the unique historical and cultural significance of Israel and endeavours to represent, as its second theme, the basic values of justice, truth, mercy and compassion.

The third theme is its character, which has evolved from biblical images in the tradition of Jewish law.
