Shrine of the Book

This is part of the Israel Museum. In its underground vaults it houses and preserves the Dead Sea Scrolls. These are very ancient manuscripts from the first century CE discovered in a cave at Qumran near the Dead Sea in 1947. It also has other ancient manuscripts found in the Judean Desert and Masada.

The architecture of the building is based on the shape of the ancient clay vessels in which the scrolls were stored.
