Hebrew University on Har Hatzofim

The Hebrew University was founded in 1918 on Har Hatzofim (Mount Scopus) and the original campus was inaugurated in 1925 at the amphitheatre. The ceremony was one of the most important and impressive events in Zionist history and symbolised the renewal of Jewish spiritual and academic life.

In April 1948, the entire campus was evacuated after the ambush and murder of 78 staff members.

After the 1948 War of Independence, Har Hatzofim remained an Israeli enclave in Jordanian territory. The university could not function effectively and therefore a second campus was developed in Givat Ram in the western part of the city.

After the Six Day War in 1967, the site at Har Hatzofim once again, following expansion and renovation, became the main campus of the Hebrew University.
