Jerusalem 3000 Book of Ideas ============================ Map --- OVERALL AIM To enable pupils to identify with Jerusalem by: # indicating a personal link with the city # recognising the location and significance of areas and places special to them. WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING Creating a visual connection to Jerusalem by identifying areas and places which pupils have visited. THIS ACTIVITY IS SUITABLE FOR School or Cheder Classroom - Years 1 to 4 WHAT YOU WILL NEED Ample wall space A poster size map of the centre of Jerusalem Different coloured card and thread Blu Tac Personal photographs and picture postcards GETTING STARTED Decide on categories to be identified and select a different coloured card for each category. Here are some suggestions: Holy Places Yellow Museums Red Archaelogical Sites Blue Park, Forests, Gardens Green Hotels Orange Shops and Restaurants Pink Family and Friends Purple MOVING FORWARD Talk about visits to Jerusalem and record experiences, impressions, feelings about people and places visited, onto the appropriately coloured card. Identify the specific place on the map and using appropriately coloured thread to match the category, connect the descriptive card to the place. To enrich the description, add a drawing, photograph or postcard next to or near the card. YOUR MAP WILL LOOK SOMETHING LIKE THIS: DEVELOPING THE ACTIVITY Create a wish list to enable pupils who have not visited Jerusalem to participate. Here is a suggestion - When I visit Jerusalem, I will go to see the Israel Museum. The map can be an ongoing activity adding to it during the year. Invite parent to participate. Use the marked locations for further study of Jerusalem. REACHING THE GOAL The completed map will enable pupils to connect to Jerusalem in a visible and Geography Key Stage 1 Focus on geographical questions e.g. What/Where is it? What is it like? How did it get like this? Key Stage 2 Describing physical and human features of places and recognising those features that gives places their character.
