Jerusalem 3000 Book of Ideas ============================ PLANT A JERUSALEM GARDEN ------------------------ OVERALL AIM To appreciate the beauty and diversity of Jerusalem's natural environment and bring it nearer to home by planting a Jerusalem 3000 commemorative garden. WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING Exploring the flora of Jerusalem through books, photographs, slides etc; discovering what grows in and around Jerusalem and identifying certain shrubs, plants and flowers for planting in a Jerusalem 3000 commemorative garden or window box. THIS ACTIVITY IS SUITABLE FOR School/Synagogue Garden Home/Classroom Window Box WHAT YOU WILL NEED Reference Books: Beautiful Plants of the Bible (Dr D Daron - Palphot) Nature in Our Biblical Heritage (Nogah Hareuveni - Neot Kedumim) The Education Resource Centre (e-mail aje-erc@brijnet.org tel: (+44) 0181 203 6799) has a well-stocked reference library to help you. A Seed/Plant Catalogue: Many flowers which grow in and around Jerusalem also grow in the United Kingdom A helpful garden centre A garden plot Window box A flower trough Lots of green fingers GETTING STARTED Plan your display - perrenials, annuals, flowers, shrubs etc. Choose your site and start digging! Consider a themed display. Here are some suggestions: Biblical - Many of the shrubs and flowers are mentioned in the Torah. Research the equivalent Hebrew names and their appropriate verses and use in the display. Festival - The seven species - Shivat Haminim The four kinds - Arba'at Haminim Herbs and Spices - As used in the Temple for incence offerings. Seeds of the Future - Pupils plant seeds in individual containers and plant out when ready. Give each plant a Jerusalem associate name. MOVING FORWARD Involve as many pupils/people as possible in the preparation, planting and upkeep of the garden/window box. Chart the progess of the garden. Create 'A Guide to our Jerusalem Garden' which includes the Hebrew names and their appropriate biblical verses. Link the project into KS1 and KS2 Science 'Life Processes and Living Things' - green plants and organisms. Dedicate the garden to an aspect of Jerusalem's life e.g. In memory of those who fought for Jerusalem To the future growth and development of Jerusalem. POINTS TO CONSIDER Have a planting ceremony. REACHING THE GOAL A beautiful display of Jerusalem shrubs and flowers to enhance the synagogue/ school garden or the home/classroom window box and serve as a permanent reminder of the Jerusalem 3000 celebration - this summer and many more summers to come.
