Jerusalem 3000 Book of Ideas ============================ A JERUSALEM DAY --------------- OVERALL AIM To involve the school in a day of focused activity in order to: # encourage pupils to appreciate the centrality of Jerusalem in Jewish life # recognise the affinity each Jew has with Jerusalem # feel closer to the city and its inhabitants. WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING Involving pupils actively in a day devoted entirely to a Jerusalem experience. THIS ACTIVITY IS SUITABLE FOR * School * Youth Club WHAT YOU WILL NEED An action plan - who is doing what, when and how? Parental help Enthusiastic participants Plenty of time for pre-planning GETTING STARTED Choose a theme although this is not entirely necessary. Design your workshop to include different kinds of activities - inter-active, competitive, creativ Here are some suggestions for a thematic approach: Jerusalem Line Up Story Line Listening to stories about Jerusalem past and present. Talk Line A mini language laboratory where pupils will learn words and phrases in Ivrit to use during the day. Toe-the-Line A competitive floor game in which pupils progress from start to finish by matching people to places and events. Out Line An art competition to create a Jerusalem flag, logo Direct Line Compose a prayer for Jerusalem. Write a message for the Kotel. Recite a prayer for peace in Jerusalem. Line of Action Watch video extracts from films and newsclips depicting the fight for/history of Jerusalem. Drop Me A Line A computer link-up to a Jerusalem school penfriend system. Choose from the list - write a short introductory letter - the school post/faxes/e-mails. Chat Line Phone/e-mail link with a famous Jewish personality. In theLine of Meet an Israeli soldier, a Jerusalem policeman, bus driver. Duty Listen to his/her experiences and ask questions. Time Line A drama workshop. Travel back in time and act out Lineage A team game. Discover who the famous Jerusalem personalities are by asking searching questions within a time limit. Air Line Write and tape-record a Jerusalem 3000 celebration message to the Children of Jerusalem. (The right contacts will broadcast it for you - Spectrum/Kol Yisrael.) Stand on Line Lunchtime in a mock-up self-service Jerusalem restaurant/ pizza place, pitta and felafel kiosk - using the phrases learned in Talk Line. Line by Line Creative writing workshop recording the day's events for the youth club/school magazine. Chorus Line End the day with a Jerusalem song and dance session. MOVING FORWARD Design and organise each workshop to match the age groups of the participating classes. Decide on content, format and location of each workshop. How many workshops are appropriate for time, space and number of participants? How much time should each workshop take? Plan the procedure for each group of pupils to visit every workshop ('round robin'). POINTS TO CONSIDER Invite various guests well in advance i.e. Jerusalem soldier, policeman etc. Have background music. Invite the press/radio/local dignitaries. Have a commercial corner to sell food and gifts donated by local businesses. REACHING THE GOAL Make the day meaningful as well as fun. Award prizes for the art, creative writing and team games. Look back, reflect and evaluate the day. Write about the experience for school magazine/newsletter.
