The New Gate

Origin of Names:
- As it was the most recent gate to be built into the Old City walls it was called the New Gate.
- The Gate of Hammid, after the Turkish Sultan Abdul Hammid.
Location/Direction:
- The gate is situated in the north-western part of the Old City walls and faces north.
- It provides the shortest direct access into the
Christian Quarter and was built on the northern wall to
allow easier access to the Old City for people who were
now settling outside the city walls.
Distinctive Feature:
- Crenellated stonework surrounding the arched doorway.
- At about 265 metres above sea level this is the highest of all the gates
Date:
It was built in 1887 and is the most recent of the gates.
This gate was closed and sealed off by the Jordanians in 1948 and was
re-opened by the Israeli Army after the Six Day War in June 1967.
