The parashah tells us that Nisan is the start of the Jewish year - Taking pride in our Jewish calendar |
In this parashah the word 'Aviv' is mentioned for the first time, as the name of the first month. We do not use this as the name of a month, but of a season.
Activity One:
Sing this song.
Tune: Bobby Shaftoe
Nisan, Iyar, Sivan, Tammuz,
Av, Ellul, Tishrei, Cheshvan,
Kislev, Tevet, Shevat, Adar,
These are the months of the year
Activity Two:
Print the months of the year (English transliteration) on Resource Pages 1 - 3 Distribute these to twelve children who have to form themselves into a line, correctly showing the order of the year. Get other children to help them with advice - but not shouting out!

Key Stage 2 8 - 11 |
Jewish people are part of a society composed of many cultures and religions. The parashah tells us that the B'nei Yisrael in Mitzrayim/Egypt kept their separate ways - Accepting differences between people |
In our multicultural society different groups use different calendars. The parashah tells us that the Jewish calendar starts at the month of Nisan. Which other calendars can you list? Name them and explain what you know about them, for example, Christian, Chinese, School etc.
